What are cookies?
Cookies should be understood as IT data, in particular text files, stored in end-user devices and intended for the use of websites. These files allow to recognize the user's device and properly display the website adapted to the user’s individual preferences. What types of cookies do we use?
Cookies can be divided with respect to:
A. Necessity for service provision
Necessary - they are absolutely necessary for the proper functioning of the website or functionality that the user wants to use.
Functional - they are important for the operation of the website:
• they serve to enrich the functionality of the website, without them the website will work properly, however it will not be adapted to the user's preferences,
• they serve to ensure a high level of website functionality, without the settings saved in cookie files, the level of website functionality may be reduced, but it should not prevent the use of the service,
• they serve very important functionalities of the website, blocking them will cause that selected functions will not work properly.
Business - enable the implementation of a business model based on which the site is made available, blocking them will not result in unavailability of the entire website functionality, but may reduce the level of service due to the inability of the site owner to obtain funds subsidizing the site. This category includes, for example, advertising cookies.
B. Time period for which cookies are placed on the user’s end device
Temporary cookies (session cookies) - cookies placed while using the browser (session) are deleted after closing it.
Persistent cookies (permanent cookies) - they are not deleted after closing the browser and remain on the user's device for a specified period of time, or without a validity period, depending on the settings of the website owner.
C. Origin of cookies, i.e. service administrator who manages cookies
Own cookies (first party cookies) - cookies placed directly by the owner of the website that has been visited.
External cookies (third-party cookies) - cookies placed by external entities whose page components were triggered by the site owner.
D. Puspose they serve
Website configuration - enable settings of functions and services on the website.
Website security and reliability - enable verification of authenticity and optimization of service performance.
Authentication - allows you to inform when a user is logged in, so that the website can show relevant information and functions.
Session state - allows you to save information about how users use the site. They can refer to frequently visited websites or possible error messages displayed on some websites. Cookies used to save the so-called "session state" help improve services and increase the comfort of browsing.
Processes - enable efficient operation of the website itself and the functions available on it.
Ads - allow displaying of ads that are more interesting to users, and at the same time, more valuable to publishers and advertisers. They also allow to personalize ads and can be used to display ads outside of the site (domain) pages.
Location - allows you to customize the displayed information to the user's location.
Analyzes and research, traffic audits - enable site owners to better understand their users' preferences and to improve and develop products and services through analysis. Typically, the website owner or research company collects information anonymously and processes trend data without identifying individual users' personal data.
E. Interference with the privacy of the user
Harmless - include cookies:
• necessary for the correct operation of the website,
• needed to enable the functionality of the site, but their operation has nothing to do with user tracking.
Tracking - used to track users, however, do not include information that identifies specific user data.
Do cookies contain personal data?
Personal data gathered using cookies can be collected only to perform specific functions for the user. Such data is encrypted in a way that prevents access of unauthorized persons.
